Zoombak 346

Zoombak has a GPS personal tracking device for almost every need. From dog GPS tracking to car GPS tracking, they have it covered.

We explain compare the differences in the 100, 200, 300, and 346. Zoombak is one of the more popular suppliers of tracking devices. Although they offer three different packages, the device itself is the same. The compact design, 2.87 x 1.69 x .0.82 inches (L x W x H), weighs only 2.5oz, makes it easy to take along with you and it is water-resistant. The 200 Car and Family tracker and the 300 and 346 Universal Tracker differ only in what is included with the unit. The 300 and 346 Universal Tracker is the unit only, while the 200 Car and Family includes the car mounting kit.

They do not require any activation fee nor are there any hidden fees. Upfront their monitoring fee is quite basic starting at $14.99/month. A one year contract is required and if you cancel your contract, an early penalty will be assessed.

They offer continuous tracking which will update every 5 minutes for up to one hour. The data provided will give the location, time and date, all of which is shown on a map at their web site Zoombak.com. It should be noted that the product is only compatible in the United States. You may wish to check their coverage area to make sure that the unit can be used where you need it.

Their tracker uses "Assisted GPS technology" which combines both GPS and cellular technology to more precisely determine the location of your tracking device.

With the Zoombak you can set up to ten safety zones with up to five zones active at one time. When the tracker leaves any of the activated safety zones you are alerted by email, cell phone, text message or all three. There is no limit to the number of alerts you can receive. You can also elect to be notified if the power is shut off or when the battery is low.

The rechargeable battery has a 5 day life on standby and up to 150 location requests per charge. Obviously, the more you query the unit the shorter the time between charges. Initial charge time is 6 hours.

Zoombak claims the battery lasts up to five days before recharging. The best I've been able to get is 69 hours (less than three days). I have no use for something that needs constant attention. I have NEVER received an alert when the Zoombak leaves a zone that I have set.

I have used other, and more expensive, tracking units and I have to say I am impressed with the accuracy of this unit. So long as it is stationary it has excellent accuracy, even when indoors. Tracking while moving has large variances in the accuracy, but that is the same with even the more expensive units. The small size of it is what impresses me most. I drop it in my kids backpack or pocket when they go on fieldtrips and it gives me additional peace of mind. I would definitely take it with me when trail riding or backpacking. The service fee is great considering you get an unlimited amount of locates, other companies often charge per locate plus the monthly service and it adds up quick. The main complaint I have is the rechargeable battery life needs to be improved. I have heard other complaints about the customer service, but the two times I dealt with them I had favorable results each time.

I bought this to keep track of a car that I loaned to a somewhat irresponsible relative. Worked great most of the time, other times it didn't- I think most fault was due to the website. Couldn't get the cell phone callback to work ever.

CAUTION: IF YOU PURCHASE NEW, YOU MUST BUY THE 1YR CONTRACT. IF YOU DECIDE TO QUIT THE CONTRACT EARLY, YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY AN EARLY OUT ($100) IF YOU DECIDE TO COMPLETLY BE RID OF THE ZOOMBAK, THE EMAIL ACCT YOU CREATE WILL BE STUCK WITH IT FOR LIFE! YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE EMAIL ACCT.

I deal with many GPS products daily as a part of my business. This one is POOR at best. The online map is tiny and you can't resize it so you better be familiar with the area the GPS unit is located. You can't resize the map or make it larger which doesn't make any sense.

If you call support you will get people who understand VERY little English. They might speak a bit of it but heck I can probably sign a song in a foreign language without knowing what it means myself. Their support group can't even understand why you are calling. I honestly thought I had the wrong number the English was so poor. I am not sure it would be much worse if you dialed the wrong number as they would be just as confused only the English would be much better so at least you can communicate.

Currently my unit which is under warranty has a loose connection in the mini USB port. I have yet to reach anyone at support that understands what I am talking about or understands English.

Don't buy this product unless you need limited and undependable GPS tracking that's slow and full of bugs to work out. Wait for a competitor product with a company with U.S. based support.

What's not so great: Poor reception and customer service

I was very excited to get this product but could not get it to work. I spent about an hour on the phone with customer service (30 minutes was on hold). After an hour I was told either my device was defective or could not get service. She told me the area where i live only has one bar of service. I live in a city of 200,000 and can't get service?

What's great about it: Easy to use and set up
What's not so great: Safety zones are too small

We bought this product to install in our fathers car. The safety zone feature was the main reason for purchsing Zoombak. Unfortunately the safety zone is very limited in its area (1/2 mile). This is barely enough area to get out of his neighborhood! I talked to Zoombak but there is no way to increase the safety zone. The feature is a waste of time unless you are walking; but the unit is made for a vehicle. The options should allow for 1,5 and 10 miles. If you need a larger coverage area Zoombak is not for you.

If you have teenage drivers, you need this!

The online tracking at Zoombak.com is very easy to use. You can either do "spot checking" and see where your car is at that moment, or you can turn on "continuous tracking" and have your car tracked for an hour at a time. My only wish is that it was for longer than an hour. At the end of the hour, the tracking shuts off and you have to restart it manually.

A nice feature of the Zoombak is the ability to set zone alarms. If the car goes a certain distance from the location during certain hours, you can receive either text alerts on your cell phone, emailed alerts, or both.

You don't need a PC to track your car - it can be done via a cell phone, or even a call to Zoombak's customer service number.

I've only had to call Customer Service twice. Once to activate the unit, and again when I thought I had a problem with the unit - turns out I did not have any problem with it - and both times the agent was very polite.

I've had this permanently installed in my car so it stays constantly charged. I had Best Buy install it, and they were quick and inexpensive.

Even if you do not have teen drivers, this product will help give you and your loved ones peace of mind. Cars break down, cell phones batteries run out, cars get stolen...imagine knowing that you can find out where your car is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Zoombak has worked incredibly well for my needs and I highly recommend it! I had first heard of the Zoombak for pets, but the Universal Locator has exceeded my expectations for an elderly relative. The website and customer support services are useful and easy to navigate. I have read other reviews that complained about brief service outages, but have not personally experienced any difficulties to date. Great product! Great service! You can't put a price tag on the piece of mind this product provides.

I am in Southern California (San Diego County) and got this device to track our family minivan, but after doing all the initial setup, configuring my alert zones, etc, the Zoombak didn't perform well. It failed many time to notify me when we were entering or leaving a Zone. For me it worked only 50% of the time, and there were a lot of dead spots. Since it uses T-Mobile and A-GPS (needs the cell towers to relay information), the coverage is not as good as other larger service providers. After trying it for a couple weeks, I had to return it to the store. I don't recommend it at all.

Keeps Track of My Dad

By Mark, 4/20/2009

Pros: Easy To Use
Cons: Can not replace battery

I use it to track my Dad in case he gets lost. The only problem is when the rechargeable battery cannot be recharged anymore then the unit must be replaced. It is not as accurate as my car gps. But it is accurate within a block. The locations history and email notifications are good. Their web site is slow.

Cons: Low Quality, Monthy fee

Zoombak ZMBK346 Universal A-GPS Locator:

Don't buy this product. It is a low quality device with monthly fees. The battery died in i one day. Radio Shack sells better tracking units.

Pros: Well Made, Works Well With GPS, Improves Functionality, Easy To Use

I love this product. My mother is still independent, but I still worry. We use this in her car and I'm notified via text message when she's left the house and at anytime I can get her current location sent to my cell phone.

No more having to run over to the house to check on her because no one is answering the phone and she forgot to tell me she was going somewhere.

I did have a little trouble getting it to link up the first time, but customer service (and I really got English when I pressed 1) got me up and running in a matter of minutes.

Reasonably priced for assurance of my mother's safety. I would (AND HAVE) recommended this product to my friends and family.

Easy to use and GREAT customer service

By balletgirl, 04/15/2009

What's great about it: Good price, easy to set up and use, and great customer service that is both patient and helpful.

What's not so great: Battery life

This product is very easy to set up and use. The website is straightforward and simple. Customer service support spent over an hour on the phone with me. They were extremely thorough and helpful. They answered ALL of my questions and were patient and cordial. Best customer service I have ever received. The device is small and compact and doesn't make noise. The only concern is having to recharge the battery every week if used 24/7. The option of having it hardwired is available so as not to recharge it yourself. I am very pleased with the product and would recommend it for the price.

I was very impressed with the size and reliability of the zoomback. I have tried several other GPS devices and found none that were as powerful and reliable as zoomback for tracking and locating my travels.

My daughter and I took a 3200 mile motorcycle road trip to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming this past summer. My wife could not go because of her work schedule, but she wanted to be a part of our trip anyway. We purchased the Zoomback GPS unit so she could follow us and watch our progress throughout the trip. The Zoomback GPS unit never missed a beat during the entire trip, all through the mountains and remote areas of the park. We were even able to get directions from my wife when we decided to change our route during the trip. My wife could track where we were and relay up to date information from the Internet to us using our cell phone about which route to take. That alone was a life saver due to some of the road conditions coming out of the park. The size of the Zoomback unit was also helpful since on a motorcycle you are always looking for more room. It is small enough to put in your pocket and take with you on a hike through the woods. The battery life was also a plus. The Zoomback lasted longer than any other unit I have tried, so I did not have to take extra batteries and change them every few hours like other units. All and all I am EXTREMELY pleased with the Zoomback GPS unit we purchased and would recommend them to anyone who is traveling or going to remote areas. Thanks again for your product.
