uPro Golf GPS
New Company and New Technology

Callaway uPro

The uPro golf GPS has new features that will really get your attention. Aerial views, data and more. Read golf GPS reviews and ratings on the Callaway upro.

One of the lightest and slimmest golf GPS units on the market, the Callaway uPro GPS introduces its' new technology to the delight of the golfing community. It sports a 2.2" high screen in brilliant, daylight viewable color.

With the use of its' SmartView™ technology, the Callaway uPro golf GPS automatically presents dynamically generated "viewports," which show you information based on your next potential shot. As your position on the course changes, so does the view of the course. You can even purchase a software add-on to enable the uPro to accept voice commands.

The Callaway uPro GPS offers two variations of golf course download. The Basic plan, which offers free downloads, shows the distance to the front and back of all hazards differentiating between types of hazards. Hazards are automatically displayed in the order they appear on the course based on the user's position. The information is updated as you move down the course. You are also provided the distance from your position to the front, center and back of the green.

The second plan is the Pro mode with down load prices ranging from $10 to $1.20 per course depending on the number of credits you purchase. Check uPro Course Download pricing. In Pro mode the uPro shows a video flyover giving the player the layout of the hole from an aerial view. It also offers scale-accurate measurements to measure to any point on the course, even from the outer limits of the rough. One Pro mode download is included with the purchase price. Course downloads are available to Callaway uPro owners by simply connecting the Callaway uPro device to a computer. Once it is connected to a computer, the user will be automatically directed to www.uprogps.com where courses all over the nation are listed and available for download on a click and buy basis. The GPS technology programmed in the Callaway uPro provides the user with a list of all golf courses in the U.S and will provide an automatically sorted list of golf courses closest to your current location. This is truly a unique golf GPS and for further information, I would recommend taking a quick look at the uPro user guide to explore all the features the uPro golf GPS has to offer.

Although the uPro golf GPS currently does not have a digital scorecard we have been told by Callaway that they expect to have a software upgrade, offering that feature, available this spring. The uPro is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X v10.4 or later.

The upro is a great device that has a lot of positives when using it on the golf course and some negatives when at home.

Pros:
Great gps, with the calibration the device is super accurate
The flyovers are great when playing a course for the first time, or if you haven't played a course in a while.

The overhead views are great and the any point technology is better than a laser rangefinder. You get the exact distance to carry a trap or water, and you can know this no matter what the terrain looks like. With a laser rangefinder it is impossible to know exactly if you have an uphill shot and can't see the surface of the green.

The basic mode courses are all free, which gives you the same information you would find in other gps that charge a fee. The pro mode is priceless and with the course bundle packages you can get courses for just about 2 dollars a course!

Misses

The syncing to the computer is really poor, the device does not sync every time you hook it up. There are errors the first three times I connect to my computer. I hope this gets taken care of in a soon to be released software update. This I am sure will be fixed soon, as there customer service is the best I have ever dealt with period. They respond about 10 minutes after I submit a request through the website by calling you on the phone, and you get to speak with someone not just an email response.

I like the product for the courses that are available. They say that they "guarantee" to map your home course in 4 days. Not true. I have been waiting for 6 months, they used to speak to me about it, now they just ignore me.

This device is cheesecake to use! IMPO, compared to other skycaddie devices, the UPRO blows it away. I have used my buddies SG5 and got so frustrated with its functionality I had to quit using it. Menu and navigation of this thing is a breeze!!!

Its so light and compact to carry. I am able to get my yardage, slip it in my pocket and stick my shot without feeling like I have a brick on me. The screen was readable in direct sunlight with no problems and large enough too.

Manufacturer says battery life per charge is approximately 1 round, however I made it through 18 holes with 60% battery life. Mind you I wasn't using it every 2 seconds and I was in battery saver mode but I could have gone 18 more and been just fine!

In Promode, the measure feature was great. Laying up from the rough to an exact distance is no longer a shot in the dark.

Since the recent acquisition by Callaway, I can only expect great things from Upro. With the ability to upgrade the software with new applications, I can't wait to see what's next!

It would be perfect but as much as I appreciate the free basic downloads, the ProModes are pricey. They say "as low as" $ but they dont tell you as much as $10 a course.

Other than that, it is the best golf investment I ever made and I have been deadly with my irons since!!!!

Course Availability: Have had my unit for 4 months. Can only get Basic mode for my home course and it will be months before I can get ProMode for some of the courses in my area.. Customer support said the images were not good enough on my home course for ProMode. They should have requested new imagery immediately, but did so only after several emails over a period of almost 4 months. I would recommend this unit ONLY if you check course availability first and are able to get ProMode for the courses you play as the 4 day guarantee has caveats.

Features: There is a new voice feature but it costs extra. They should have added other features such as shot statistics and scorekeeping before they added voice. Have a feeling that new features will cost extra as they come out, but we'll see!! Other units already come with these features as well as some of the features that the Upro has such as layup distance, etc...There are other units that give layup distance as well as distance to the green from the layup position.

I've just finished my first year as a golfer. Any golf gps will help newbies like me with club selection. I did thorough research on golf gps units and even used friends units before I purchased the Upro. I have the 2009 model and have not had any software glitches of the kind that has been reported in the past. The syncing process of downloading courses is somewhat slow.

I think the unit has great potential but has a ways to go. I would give it more stars but for the lack of some features, course availability, and the customer service. The guy who was servicing me through email was very nice but also very slow. They've been bought by Callaway and were also moving into their new building (Feb 2009) but still should have put in for new imagery for my home course as soon as i requested it...well before the buyout. I still have no idea when the new images will be done..I have a feeling it will be some time in the far distant future.
