The TomTom 720 outpaces the One XL Read the Ratings and Reviews

You'll find discontinued TomTom 720 portable car GPS system details plus TomTom Go 720 review and ratings. TomTom GPS systems features are explained. A lot of features are included with the TomTom GPS system. It's wide 4.3" screen is easily read in sunlight and provides a sharp, clear picture. It is also adjustable for day and night viewing. Maps of the US and Canada are preloaded with the unit and may be updated at no cost to you, for the first 30 days after purchase. The maps may be viewed in 2D and 3D. You may also join (for free)"Map Share" which will allow you to download map changes made by others and to upload changes that you have made. This is a helpful way to keep your maps up to date. Destination routing may be created a number of different ways. Entering your destination address is as simple as entering State, City, Street and number. "Itinerary Planning" is also included, allowing you to enter multiple destinations along the way. A great feature for those of you that make deliveries or make several stops during the day. A nice feature but it doesn't sort them for the most efficient route. Of course, you can also select previous destinations or one of the Points of Interest. A most popular inclusion is "Text to Speech" which enables the TomTom 720 to announce the name of the street on which you should turn, along with when to turn and what direction you should turn. Should you miss a turn or make a wrong turn, the TomTom 720 will recalculate the route to get you back on course. Equipped with bluetooth technology and with a compatible cell phone you can make "hands free" calling and it will even answer incoming calls for you. To check to see if your phone is compatible with the TomTom bluetooth click this link:Tomtom Bluetooth Phone Compatibility With this feature activated you may also use the fee based TomTom Plus service. For more information on TomTom Plus, click this link: TomTom Plus Services. The TomTom Go 720 is also compatible with RDS-TMC traffic. You must purchase a subscription to the service and the applicable receiver. Before you buy you may wish to check their coverage: Total Traffic Network coverage. A SD slot is built in the unit allowing you to download music, pictures and documents. Note that the SD card is not included with the unit. A picture viewer is included along with a document reader. A FM transmitter is also included allowing you to broadcast the TomTom 720's sound over your car FM radio. There is an iPod cable included and iPod control on the touch screen. Most screens are programmable to meet your needs. TomTom may have overdone this just a touch, as it becomes a little overwhelming. A great safety feature is the "Help" icon which, when touched, will give you your current location and the location of the nearest police and fire stations plus the closest hospital and more. Other cool programmable features are setting notification when you are over the speed limit, nearing a school or church, suggesting breaks along the way and more. In addition, you can record up to about 60 commands in your own voice. Unfortunately, you cannot use this feature with Text to Speech. Other voices may be downloaded from TomTom or 3rd party sources. See GPS Voices. The mount included with the TomTom 720 is a ball and socket type, suction cup mount. The power cable and traffic cable are both attached to the unit and not the mount, making it necessary to disconnect them to take the unit with you. If you use the dashboard disc to mount your TomTom 720, be aware that the disc is almost impossible to remove.

TomTom 720

I have owned this unit for over a year. I tried several different manufacturers and models through friends and coworkers before I bought. The thing that won me over was the user interface. I still believe it to be among the best. HOWEVER, the maps are so out of date. Major new highways that have been open for three-plus years are still not on the map. I performed all of the updates for the first year and I used Mapshare hoping that would help. No such luck. Additionally, I can never get "home" because my street is off by about 300 feet. This has always appeared wrong on many map programs because the subdivision was not built like it was originally drawn but they won't fix it. I recently looked at a Garmin which has maps supplied by Navteq and my road is now in the correct location on their maps. They have fixed that in the last year and TomTom has not. Overall, as I said, a good but not great unit.

I have owned the Tom Tom 720 (it was a gift) for over a year. During that time, it functioned well. However, a few days ago, the Maps, other than Guam, disappeared. I am not a novice with these products. I was sure that the U.S. maps had somehow been deleted. I contacted Tom Tom and was given instructions on how to recover the maps or reset the unit. I followed the advice precisely. No luck. Tom Tom concluded that the maps were, indeed, lost. They said the only way to restore them was to purchase/download for $69.95. I must admit, this did not cheer me up. Not planning to drive in Guam anytime soon, I tossed the Tom Tom in the garbage. I will purchase another GPS; you can guess what brand it will not be. The TomTom 720 is superb. The features you get for the price make it well worth the money. I love having the ability to update it online without any pesky monthly or yearly fees like some other brands and factory installed GPS in most vehicles. My only negative comment is on the bluetooth feature. It only works with certain networks and specific models of phones...of course you dont know this until you get home and try to interface it with your cell phone. I have Sprint and of course it doesnt work with Sprint. However its no big deal if you dont care too much about weather and traffic jam data. You can get that info off any radio station anyway. Not having the bluetooth features available does not take away from the versatility of the device at all. It is highly accurate but no GPS will ever be 100% especially in new neighborhoods or when businesses come and go so often. Still havent figured how to make map/route corrections yet and share them. Overall, I highly recommend the GO 720. You gotta get it. Best Buy:

What's great about it: Screen size, Quick response time, Great features, Support folks helpful and friendly. Easy to use. What's not so great: Windshield mount could be improved
Like so many others, I spent a lot of time reading reviews (including Consumers Reports) and checking out many different GPS units. After a lot of consideration, I chose the TOM TOM GO 720 and purchased it on 2/20/09 and have been impressed with it these past couple of weeks. I use it in business so I have had a good amount of use in a short time. This GPS is easy to learn and use. The TOM TOM HOME software and site works well. There are a lot of features and selections for those features. Like others, after reading their helpful reviews, I did the upgrade of the map through the Map Guarantee program. What's great about it: Battery Life, Voice Mute, Mem Card, Ability to edit maps What's not so great: Cartoon Interface, Bluetooth mind of its own, a Mee Too throw-together
Have had 5 GPS sysms, This one is OK but not satisfying fundamentally. I bought the TT720 GO for my wife and it is a disappointment. The screen is cluttered and looks like crayon drawings. The prices have dropped on all GPS market- and for $300- There is much better overall to choose from, value wise. By BigSmith, 02/21/2009
What's great about it: Easy to use once you get the hang. FM transmitter, SD for music/photos What's not so great: Software update to unit REMOVES FM TRANSMIT for directions, not music
Unit works very well once you get hang of touch screen. Some time required to handle route planning with VIA. Unit software update (latest) removes FM transmission of directions. Unless you do not use this, DO NOT UPDATE. TOMTOM claims they are working on this issue but no date for resolution. This also affects the GO 730 as well. TOMTOM Home software also not working well in 2.5 version. Wait for 2.6 before upgrading your computer software. TomTom 720 Owner Ratings
