TomTom XXL 540TM By box mountain "limbo", June 30, 2010
Just got this product a couple weeks ago and the first time I needed the traffic update feature, it did not work. Tom Tom customer service said it is a software issue and I should be able to download an update in a couple of weeks or so, but could not provide a specific date or any additional information. While I really like many of the other features the main reason I bought this was to help avoid traffic jams. By tomkatt, June 15, 2010
The most appealing feature of ths gps is "lifetime maps. After 6 phone calls and attempts by Tomtom to download I still do not have that feature. The gps works fine. The product works great, but spend the extra $$ to get the lifetime maps edition. Tomtom will charge you more for one year of add-on maps than you will pay for the lifetime add-on, and you CANNOT purchase the lifetime subscription after the initial purchase! Walmart

Picked TomTom XXL 540TM for two primary reasons: 1. Free lifetime map and traffic updates stabilized the cost of owning unit. 2. Ease of inputting destinations compared to leading brand Garmin. Unit used on trip to Myrtle Beach. Other reviews had complained about the windshield mount and problem with using "code" supplied for free updates. I encountered NO problems. The Unit would have received a top rating in all respects except that listening to the voice directions only could lead to confusion on upcoming turns. One must also look at the unit's display to see upcoming turns indicated on the display. The voice would say "stay right" when a left turn was shortly coming up. TomTom XXL 540 series Owner Ratings
