The TomTom XL335s comes with a 4.3” anti glare, color, touch screen

TomTom XL 335TM

OVERVIEW

The TomTom XL335s comes with a 4.3” anti glare, color, touch screen and preloaded maps of the United States and Canada. You may purchase the XL 335s in four combinations, the basic XL 335s, the XL 335T with lifetime traffic included, the XL 335M with lifetime map updates included and the XL 335TM.with both lifetime maps and traffic included. All these TomTom GPS units have the same basic features.

Included Features

EasyMenu™

Since it’s a known fact that no one reads the instruction manual until it’s too late, Tom Tom has created EasyMenu™ allowing the user to easily access all of TomTom’s powerful features through its simple and intuitive two-button menu. Just a tap gets you started, and easy-to-follow commands and recognizable icons lead you through a quick start-up process to get you on the road in no time.

Spoken street names

The one feature that no one should be without is “text to speech”. This is probably the most important safety feature you can have with your GPS. The TomTom XL335s not only will tell you when and what direction to turn but will also announce the street name on which you should turn thus, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road and concentrate on driving the vehicle.

You’ll appreciate the 4.3” wide, anti glare, color touch screen which makes reading the maps an easy chore not to mention reading the menus and icons.

IQ Routes™

A unique feature which is proprietary to TomTom GPS units is IQ Routes™. Despite posted speed limits, traffic traveling along a road at 8 a.m. moves at a different pace than it does at 2 p.m. Actual traffic speed is affected by rush hour, traffic light changes, pedestrian traffic, day of the week, and more. Only TomTom’s exclusive technology evaluates routes based on actual traffic speeds, rather than posted speed limits, and will recommend the fastest route for the time of the day. A really great feature, particularly if you are in an area where you are not familiar with traffic patterns.

Never Miss a Turn

Nothing is more frustrating than finding yourself in the wrong lane for an upcoming turn on a crowed freeway. The TomTom XL335s provides extra clarity when navigating difficult junctions by showing you which lane to take, so you won’t miss your turn or have to make dangerous lane crossings. Photorealistic images and a pulsing green arrow indicate exactly which lane to use.

Help Me! Emergency Menu

Travel with peace of mind. With your TomTom GPS units you can easily access local emergency providers such as police, fire stations, and hospitals. The “Where Am I?” feature pinpoints your exact location so you can accurately communicate it to emergency resources.

Maps

The TomTom XL335s comes with preloaded maps of the US and Canada. In addition TomTom GPS includes their current map guarantee which assures the purchaser that the preloaded maps will be the most current issue. They do this by allowing the unit owner to a onetime map upgrade of the pre-loaded maps within the first 30 days of purchase. The TomTom XL335M and TM include lifetime map upgrades. The upgrades occur four times per year and are uploaded with your PC via the TomTom website a TomTom Home. TomTom states that their maps include 1 million more miles of road than other GPS brands and have been rated highest in terms of quality and reliability.

TomTom XL335s Owner Reviews

I've been testing this out for about a month, and for the most part, I really like it. Any time I've entered an address, it led me right where I needed to go and gave easy-to-follow instructions. I've come up with quite a few things that bother me about this device, which is why I didn't give it a higher rating. But the fact that it has not yet led me astray is the most important thing and why I didn't give it a lower rating.

These are the strikes: It doesn't say right or left at the destination. One of the few times I used it to navigate to someplace unfamiliar, it said "You have arrived at your destination" in the middle of a busy street with office buildings on both sides. I needed one of those buildings and didn't know which way to turn. One more right or left would have been very helpful.

The "manual" basically tells you how to turn the thing on and that's it. Most of the features and settings need to be discovered. If you're a jump right in sort of person, this isn't a big deal, but I like to read what something is capable of before I start using it.

While it navigates to an entered address without a problem, I have noticed that many locations are not on its map. It lets you search for "points of interest" like restaurants and gas stations, but is missing some. I have found at least one local restaurant not listed and when I searched for local parks, it listed only one of at least half a dozen in our area.

This is my second TomTom GPS, and it's very similar to the first one: stellar UI, great support, not so good maps, stability issues.

In particular:

- do not delete voices. I deleted some computer voices and lost all of them - could not restore.
- do not use any Windows 7 64 bit PC to download updates to maps. The update fails with cryptic erro message and you are left with no maps on device. According to tech support, TomTom HOME is not compatible with Win7 64bit, and a fix is expected in a few weeks (not that you'll find it anywhere on their site).
- support advises against downloading large updates over wireless network. I did not run into this problem, but beware.

In general, once you get this thing to work, it's great. The map issues can be annoying and even downright nasty, but nothing you can't work through, and map correction allows you to fix them and submit them. On the other hand, the UI is much better than Garmin and Magellan. My wife swears by TomTom, and even the initial stability problems did not prevent us from reverting to it after trying Garmin.
