TomTom Go 930T and TomTom 930

The TomTom GPS system, the TomTom Go 903t with TomTom Traffic included and the TomTom Go 930, both have a 4.3" wide screen with a classy looking black finish case. The on/off button is located on the top of the units with the TomTom logo embossed on it. It should be noted that the only difference between the TomTom Go 930t and the TomTom 930 is TomTom traffic capability (which we will cover later.) So, any feature mentioned on the Go 930t is also available on the TomTom 930. The Tomtom GPS system comes with maps of North America and Western and Central Europe. The TomTom GPS system comes with TomTom's "Latest Map Guarantee" which ensures that you will have the most current maps available. This guarantee is good for 30 days from purchase date, so make sure you update your maps within the 30 day time-frame.

The screen comes with an abundance of information. Displays on the screen are:
1. Zoom In and Zoom Out
2. Current Navigation instructions which, if you tap this area it will verbally repeat instructions
3. GPS Signal Strength
4. The name of the next major street or road sign info
5. Name of street you are currently on
6. Trip information such as: ETA, remaining distance and trip time

When the TomTom GPS system is first initiated, there are a number of options you may select to customize the unit to meet your needs. These include: Language, left or right handed, miles or kilometers, how time is displayed, voice selection, select what you want the voice to announce, select map, day and night color schemes and set up home address. The TomTom GPS System also offers a brief tour (recommended).

Setting up a route is very easy with the TomTom GPS System. You may enter an address, select a recent destination, choose from one of your favorites, select Home, or choose one of the millions of preloaded Points of Interest. The TomTom GPS System does offer "Text to Speech" and "Voice Activation", however it is limited to entering addresses only. Text to speech enables the unit to announce the name of the street you should turn on, in addition to when and what direction to turn. TomTom GPS System will even read SMS messages to you if your cell phone is linked to the on board bluetooth.

You can also choose how you want the route calculated. Choices include: quickest route, shortest, avoid tolls, congested areas or by required arrival time. You can also choose mode of transportation on your TomTom GPS System such as walking or bicycle. The TomTom Go 930 also includes "Itinerary Planning" which allows you to program a list of stops on your route. A great feature for making sales calls or deliveries.

The best route. A new feature with the TomTom GPS system is "IQ Route" which will tell you the best way to go depending on the time of day. Such as the freeway on weekends, but side roads on Monday morning. This unique service is derived from millions of miles logged by users and compiled by TomTom Traffic. As more information is gathered, this service could be even more exact in selecting the best route. This feature could really save you time and money. If you should miss your turn or make a wrong turn, TomTom's re-routing feature will get you back on course, recalculating your route.

A couple of other useful features of the TomTom GPS System are "Help Me" and "Lane Assist". The Help Me feature enables the user to instantly obtain the address of police stations, hospitals, etc. It will also give your current location and if you have your phone linked with the bluetooth feature it will call the emergency number for you. Lane Assist will advise you in advance, what lane you should be in for the approaching turn.

TomTom Traffic: Traffic advisories are available with the TomTom GPS system. The TomTom GO 930T includes the RDS TMC traffic receiver and one year subscription to the service. It must be purchased separately for the GO 930. For coverage of TMC traffic click on the following link: Total Traffic Network coverage. TomTom traffic requires Bluetooth and a cell phone compatible with TomTom's bluetooth. To see if your phone is compatible click the following link: Tomtom Bluetooth Phone Compatibility. You will also have to set up data service with your cell phone company if you don't already have it. To find out more on TomTom Traffic options click the following link: TomTom traffic options." TomTom Plus" offers a variety of fee based services. To explore these services click this link: TomTom Plus Services.. With your phone linked to bluetooth, you will also be able to make "hands free" calls using TomTom's built-in microphone and speakers.

Both units also have a FM transmitter allowing you to transmit the 930's sound over your car FM radio. However, if you plan on using your TomTom Go 930 in Europe, please be aware of the following: Use of FM transmitters is currently illegal in certain European countries due to specific radio frequency restrictions. You must check the local regulations in all European countries in which you intend to use the FM transmitter to ensure its legality. You accept full responsibility for complying with all such laws and regulations applicable in your particular country of operation. If your car radio or speakers are bluetooth compatible, you can use TomTom's bluetooth technology to broadcast through those speakers instead of using the FM transmitter feature.

Also check to see if TomTom traffic will provide service for the country you are planing on visiting. Do not confuse the RFD FMC traffic with TomTom traffic.

"Map Share" is a unique and useful feature of TomTom. If you join Map Share (it's free and recommended) any changes you make to your map will be uploaded to the database and changes made by other users will be downloaded to your maps. A good feature keeping your maps up to date.

The TomTom GPS system comes with an SD slot (SD card is extra) and a MP3 player. You can download Audio Books along with your favorite music and play it over your unit. A remote control is also included with the unit allowing anyone in the car to control the unit with the remote. The remote must be "paired" to the GPS before it will work.

A "Home dock" is provided to connect the TomTom GO 930T to your PC/Mac. You must download TomTom's Home software first to manage your files, download map updates etc. It will also charge the unit via the USB cable. TomTom uses EPT (enhanced positioning technology) which will maintain map tracking in areas of poor reception. TomTom advertises that it comes with 5 million Points of Interest preloaded. The windshield suction cup supplied with the unit is a ball and socket type mount allowing maximum adjustment of the GPS, but maximum pressure must be applied to mount it to the windshield.

The 12volt power cable connects to the unit and not the mount as does the TomTom traffic FMC receiver cable. It would have been nice if the attached to the mount instead. Almost every screen on the TomTom GPS system, the Go 930 and 930T, have a number of custom display choices. Although it is nice to be able to customize your GPS to your liking, the number of choices on the TomTom 930 series is a bit overwhelming.

NO FM Transmitting ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read the fine print

TomTom's no longer offer FM transmitting for voice instruction through car stereo because of some law in the UK!

Read it right on the TOMTOM website

"You can use the built-in FM Transmitter. This allows you to transmit music* from your TomTom GO to your car stereo. Your car stereo receives the sound as an FM radio signal, just like it does from a radio station. You cannot listen to another radio station at the same time.

You can use the audio cable which is available as an accessory. Your car stereo needs to have a 3.5mm audio-in connector. Your GO can then play spoken instructions and music over the car radio. Phone calls are played using the speaker in your GO.

*Voice instructions cannot be transmitted via FM Transmitter"

Note the last line.

FM transmitting for VOICE INSTRUCTIONS has been REMOVED!!!!!!!!!!

Like it overall, but it takes some getting used to to really understand it and a few features aren't as good as one hopes. It's a decent value for the money; I thought comparable units from Garmin were far pricier. It dost most things well, but has a few oddities and things to be aware of.

The voice recognition for spoken addresses is generally very good. The lane instructions so far are confusing. The default computer voice is terrible. The optional voices that you can download are much better. There is also a strange glitch or trap that is easy to fall into with browsing the route. If I put in a route and then I try to browse the route, it seems that if I touch the screen a certain way or zoom in, it somehow resets my destination point. It misleadingly announces "you have reached your destination" when you are blocks away. The maps generally are OK except one time it had me turn down an unnamed alley that was bisected by a small canyon/ravine and didn't go through but it believed it was a through alleyway. The last thing it fails rather miserably at is big shopping centers and apartment complexes. But all of that happens in the minority of times (except for the nagging "keep left" instruction on freeways which is nearly all the time).

TomTom GPS System

The user interface is pretty intuitive, the general features for the money is good, and it does seem to get us there more often than not. I would advise that anyone who gets a nav unit, tomtom or otherwise, play with it a LOT before you first really need it. Never make the first time you use a nav device the time that you are in an unfamiliar place. Take it with you to the grocery store, the gas station, on your commute, etc. and try it out on your familiar routes first. You can only know what it does right/wrong/well/not-so-well if you compare what it tells you to what you know is right/wrong from your usual route(s). That way when you are in an unfamiliar place for the first time with it, any oddities in its communication you know how to interpret properly.

What's great about it: It bounces well when piched in anger.
What's not so great: Very difficult to use!!! Not friendly

To say I hate this unit is being nice!!!!! It's very difficult to use and very hard to select things while underway. If I spend an hour programing my route it's not bad. It tends to be wrong a lot of the time. It tells me to keep driving when I'm in the parking lot of the place I was tring to find. It also says it can't find a lot of locations in the big city. It couldn't even find the Convention Center in Minneapolis. It said it did not exist!!!!

TomTom has poor customer service and will not help resolve your problems with your product if out of warranty period. Their warranty is not good and their customer service is terrible. My gps does not work now and they will not do anything about it. It's only a year old and already has gone bad. I'm know stuck with a useless $600 gps. I'm now looking for another gps and their warranty coverage and customer service will be priority number one.

TomTom GPS System

This is my second TomTom. I upgraded. Nothing wrong with the first but I wanted more features. Boy, do you get them with this. It's loaded. I love the mapshare feature that lets you, or other users correct or update maps and directions due to construction or other things that may keep you from being able to use the original directions. I'd reccomend this unit just for that feature alone. The Bluetooth works great. My only real complaint is one that many people have..Hard to see in bright sunlight.

The TOMTOM 930T arrived early and is better than described. They even have a list of cities covered by Trafic Radio, the stations and their frequencies. When I travel to Atlanta or DC, that will be worth an hour of headache relief!! The device does everything they say it will do andhas the added function of a choice of many interesting voices to direct you on your way. I have advised many friends about it and recommended it.

Not compatible with Iphone data sharing

The traffic capability of the Tomtom's GPS will not work with the Iphone. If you're interested in using Traffic info and have an Iphone do NOT buy this product.

By Truth Or Consequences, December 30, 2008

The TomTom 930T is a good GPS - I guess... However, the fun is taken away from using it when the unit comes of the mount all the time, regardles if you fasten it to the windshield or the dashboard. It happens in particular in cold conditions and leaves me frustrated what to do now. I am waiting for the unit to break the next time when it comes off. The is a major design flaw and hard to understand when you pay good money on this device.

Route calculations are now blessed with the much-hyped IQ Routes technology, which is based on real average speeds, rather than static maximum speeds by road type. Translation? Additionally, you can take advantage of the 930 Traffic's handy Map Share technology, producing up-to-date map corrections. There is now a Navigon-inspired advanced lane guidance system, kicking in primarily on motorway junctions and exits. When approaching a junction, the 930 Traffic displays a real-time graphic representation of the lane structure, with large flashing arrows indicating your desired lane. Overall, the feature is a useful driving aid, rather than a distraction.

GPS signal performance has also been boosted with its new Enhanced Positioning Technology (EPT). If GPS reception is poor -- entering tunnels or driving between high rise buildings, for instance -- the EPT activates to keep your signal strong.

Despite all its useful features, the 930 Traffic is still expensive. Additionally, the FM receiver is useful for piping voice directions via our car's speakers.

TomTom GPS System

The unit I have is the GO 930 T. This is TomTom's high end unit, so with anything high end, expect to find more features and options on the device which may take away the "simplicity" that less technical people look for. Don't be fooled by that at all... this unit IS simple to use.

I live in Atlanta and the advanced lane guidance feature has worked flawlessly for me. It even gave me the static lane exit map in areas I didn't even think it would have a static image for. The ability to use customizable car symbols to represent your actual vehicle is a graphical plus. The hands free calling worked so well, that people I called didn't even know I was on a hands free device.

The sleek black finish and widescreen design makes it look like it belongs in the vehicle and not some ugly device that detracts from your car's interior. I bought this unit as a replacement for my TomTom Go 910 and I am glad I did. If you notice, I haven't commented at all on the actual navigation part of the unit... no need to.. works exactly as it should and like most other GPS units out there it does that part exceptionally well. I bought this unit for the traffic and for the lane guidance as THAT is a huge plus to GPS navigation. The traffic info updates roughly every 15 mins with the included traffic receiver and it routed me around the traffic with no problems.

I drive an average of 1000 miles a week in cities and very rural areas. This unit is fantastic. I had a Navigon 7100 and a Navigon 7200T this is much better and well worth the extra money. Do yourself a favor shop around for the best deal online. You can save alot of money and get the same unit brand new. The unit is exc. POI's easy to locate and add new one yourself, make maps corrections if needed. Routes are very good and it will keep searching for even faster routes and if it finds a faster route even in mid route it will tell you. Way too many things to list.

The only negatives would be the battery life is fairly short and the traffic antenna is separate. It is not incorporated in with the power cord like the Navigon 7200t.
