Garmin nuvi 855 Ratings and Reviews

Want the ultimate in a GPS receiver? The Garmin nuvi 855 is it. This wide screen (4.3") GPS device has added voice activation to its' long list of features. This navigational aid enables you to tell the Garmin nuvi 855 where you want to go and it will show you the way. Or ask it where you are and it will tell you. The best thing about this feature is that it really works. Its' slim design makes it easy to slip in your pocket or purse and take it with you anywhere. "Text to speech" is at the top of the list of navigational aids included with the Garmin 855. Now your GPS receiver not only tells you when and what direction to turn, but also tells you the street name. Add this to ""Lane assist" and you have the best of two worlds. Lane assist will tell you what lane you need to be in for the approaching turn. In addition it will give you a view of the upcoming junction along with views of the road signs. It will even display the current speed limit. Equipped with preloaded maps of North America, the routing features included make finding your destination a breeze. The Garmin nuvi 855 will store up to ten preplanned routes. It will also allow you to plan "multiple destinations" and then sort them to create the most efficient route. A great feature for making sales calls. You can also set up route criteria to get the fastest route or the shortest route. With "Route avoidance" you can even request the Garmin nuvi 855 to avoid tolls or highways. Should you run into a detour, "reroute" will take you around the problem and get you back on course. A new routing feature is "Photo navigation" which enables you to create routes to geotagged photos. Simply download Google® Panoramio™ pictures via Garmin Connect™ website and navigate to them. Other navigation features included are "Where am I?" which will instantly give your latitude and longitude, the nearest address and intersection and the closest police and gas station. "Garmin locate" remembers your location when it is removed from your car. This allows you to locate your automobile in large parking lots such as shopping centers and amusement parks. The Garmin nuvi 855 is compatible with FM traffic and MSN Direct. The receiver, which is built into the 12volt power cord, must be purchased separately. You should check coverage of these services to make sure your area is serviced. The following links take you to their coverage maps. Total Traffic Network coverage and MSN Direct coverage map. Garmin provides a lot more features than just navigation with the Garmin nuvi 855. Entertainment features include a world clock with time zone conversion, a MP3 player, Games, Audio book, jpeg picture viewer, currency and unit converter and a calculator. It also includes over 6 million points of interest and you can add your own. You can select your keyboard layout (QWERTY or ABC) and with "Garmin Garage" you can choose voices and custom icons for your Garmin nuvi 855. A micro SD slot is built in to the unit (micro SD card not included) enabling you to download your own music, books, pictures, maps and more. Also provided with the Garmin nuvi 855 is a FM transmitter which will transmit the Garmin GPS units sound to your FM car radio greatly increasing the quality of the audio output. This GPS device also comes with a built in headphone jack. As with all Garmin GPS units, it comes with Garmin lock. I sold my nuvi 750 to purchase the nuvi 855. Garmin changed the on/off switch from something you could use to something you have to fumble to turn on and off. I didn't think they would dump the SD memory card, so I didn't give it a thought when I bought the 855. Garmin switched to a Micro SD memory. The volume on the 855 is lower than the nuvi 750, even on max. Garmin told me that the nuvi 855 included life time maps. NOT TRUE. You have to pay another $119.00. gpsnow.com:

I have owned and extensively used the Garmin Street Pilot 2720, the nuvi 360 and nuvi 660. The nuvi 855 is definitely the best one I have ever used, even when compared to those built into some of the high end luxury cars I have been in. Garmin continues to make it easier to use right out of the box. I love the Trip Log feature which I will download into my computer Mapsource program to better understand the map and what I have done. The automatic save of “Last Position” is also great for finding your car in a large parking lot, as I just tried it out tonight. The only times I have had difficulty following routes while using the previous GPS units, while in unfamiliar regions, was with multiple lanes. I would be in the wrong lane until too late. The new Lane Assist feature will eliminate that problem. Owner GPS Ratings
