Garmin nuvi 780 GPS rating and Garmin GPS review

Garmin nuvi 780

The Garmin nuvi 780 GPS is very similar to the Garmin nuvi 770. Its wide screen (4.3") and slim design makes this portable auto GPS easy to take with you. The Garmin nuvi 780 GPS comes with preloaded maps of North America.

The Garmin 780 comes with the MSN Direct receiver which is built into the 12volt power cable. It also supports FM weather alerts. You will receive a free 3 month trial subscription of MSN Direct. With MSN Direct you will receive the latest traffic advisories, current weather, fuel prices from a database of over 100,000 gas stations. You can also search for movies and receive the latest news and financial market updates. It also has "send to GPS capability": plan trips and look up destinations from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and then wirelessly send locations to your Garmin nuvi 780 GPS. Click on the following links to determine if your local area is included in the coverage provided by these services: Total Traffic Network coverage and MSN Direct coverage map..

A useful navigation aid included with this portable GPS unit is the ability to preplan up to ten separate routes. It also supports multi-destination routing which will sort the multiple destinations and plan the most efficient route. A great asset for making deliveries. You can also program your route choices such as, fastest time, shortest distance and off road. Route avoidance and auto rerouting are standard features included with the Garmin nuvi 780.

Another useful feature that you will find with the Nuvi 780 is "Where am I" which will instantly give you your present latitude and longitude, nearest address and intersection and the closest police and fuel station.

Text to speech is standard with this portable GPS device. This feature will announce the street name and tell you when to turn and what direction to turn. Having this feature allows you to keep your eyes on the road and not have to glance at the map to determine what street you should be on.

Additional travel aids provided with the Garmin nuvi 780 GPS are the display of the present speed limit and bluetooth which enables you to make "hands free" calling on your compatible cell phone. Click the following link to check if your phone is compatible with this feature: Supported Mobile Phones

The Garmin nuvi 780 GPS comes with a FM transmitter which enables you to hear your Nuvi over your FM car radio. A SD card slot is built into the Nuvi enabling you to download your favorite music, pictures and more. Note that the SD card is not provided with the unit.

A trip log is also provided which lets you see where you have been. It has the ability to store up to 10,000 points. Some entertainment features include a jpeg picture viewer, a currency and unit converter, calculator, MP3 player, Audio Book, over 6 million points of interest, the ability to add your own points of interest, world clock and you can choose your keyboard layout (QWERTY or ABC).

The Garmin nuvi 780 GPS also is compatible with Garmin Garage which allows you to select the voice for your Nuvi and the car displayed on the Nuvi. Garmin lock is also provided.

If you plan on using your Garmin nuvi 780 overseas, please click on the following link regarding the use of the FM transmitter in some European countries. Garmin Legal Notice

"This GPS deserved the 5 stars that I gave it."

By Bippy, 12/26/2008

What's great about it: easiest to programWhat's not so great: battery life is for 4-5 hrs but if plugged in on car its getting a charge so it's ok, would like to see a game feature.

"this gps is a handy model both in ther car and out..the msn features are good and the blue tooth works fine along with FM transmission....I haven't had any problems and found the quality acceptable for all it's features.

I HAVE STUDIED ALL THE REST AND THIS IS THE VERY BEST!

I HAVE STUDIED ALL THE REST AND THIS IS THE VERY BEST! WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT IN A GPS. HAS MORE FEATURES THAN ANY OTHER MODEL AND HAS THE BEST PRICE. MSN FOR 129.00 LIFETIME ACCESS IS A STEAL. MANY MSN TOOLS TO USE! WAS WORTH WAITING FOR PRICE DROP FROM $599 TO THE $266 I PAID. WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY!

easy to use, intuitive menu, works as described, nothing negative that i found in the operation. usual garmin quality and ruggedness.

By Sean Patrick O'leary "Surf is Up", January 27, 2009

This is a very nice product at a fair price. The real bonus is the accurate traffic and gas station pricing that is part of the MSN direct bundle. One thing to remember is that this model will not update to the latest configuration of MSN direct, which is a bummer, as that update gives flight status notification and a doppler radar button. That said, not a big deal, but disapointing as I just bought this model. The unit is very fast and does a great job rerouting and in creating way points. I recommend it.
