Magellan RoadMate 1412

Like its' big brother, the Magellan 1412 comes with a wide 4.3" screen that is easily viewed in daylight. As one of the truly portable GPS systems, its' slim design makes taking it with you easier than ever. The Magellan 1412 comes with preloaded maps of North America and Puerto Rico. These maps are viewable in 2D and 3D and with "TrueView" you have the ability to view a split screen, giving a detailed picture of the approaching turn.

Probably one of the most desired features, "SayWhere" (Magellan's term for text to speech) enables the Magellan 1412 to not only tell you when and what direction to turn, but also gives you the street name on which you are turning. This is not only a useful feature but also a safety feature, as it allows you to keep your eyes on the road.

Creating a route is a snap with the Magellan 1412 and you have several options on how to do it. First off, you can customize how the route is created. Choose the way you want to navigate to use the most freeways, least freeways, fastest time, shortest distance and avoid toll roads. After a route is calculated you can exclude specific streets or freeways to get there the way you want. To create the route you can:
1. Enter an address and the "QuickSpell" feature can anticipate your entry and can finish the entry for you in addition to correcting your spelling.
2. Select one of the 6 million Points of Interest.
3. Select the "Home" icon which may be pre-programed to your home address.
4. Select an address from the address book or a previous destination.
5. Create a multi-destination route allowing stops along the way. Great for deliveries.

Other navigational aids included with the Roadmate 1412 are "Auto reroute" and "SmartDetour". Should you make a wrong turn or miss your turn, "Auto reroute" will automatically get you back on course. If you find yourself stuck in slow moving traffic, "SmartDetour" will create a detour to get you around the problem if possible.

A SD card slot is built into the Magellan 1412, however the SD card is not included with the unit. It also has an address book which allows you to enter Points of Interest of your own. With a SD card you can use the backup/restore feature to back up your address book.

Magellan is using the Centrality Atlas III processor which has an integrated GPS receiver. The Centrality Atlas III has high sensitivity for obtaining satellite locks in weak GPS signal areas and gives an accuracy of 3 meters.

There is nothing like word of mouth recommendations. That's why we have included owners' reviews of the Magellan 1412 on this site. When someone purchases a GPS with their own money and actually uses it in everyday life I think you can get a much better picture of how the Magellan 1412 system will meet your needs. We have tired to include both the pros and cons of the unit being reviewed. I hope this will help you make a decision.

This is my first GPS system that I have bought. The touch-screen options for features could be a little more user-friendly. However, I am very impressed at the accuracy of this small, lightweight tool. It is a great tool, especially if you don't like just the typical "Turn left in 1mile" instead of "Turn left at Randolph in 1mile." This is one feature which is generally included in the bigger screen GPS's and the pricier smaller ones. I bought this particular model at half the regular price, but I would have gladly paid the full price if I knew how efficient it was beforehand.

I have given the unit itself 5 stars because of the value, ease of use and quickness in updating and making corrections. The voice on the Roadmate is female and very pleasant and not invasive, unlike some other GPS devices. The directions are clear and pronunciations are better in general than other devices I have known. Navteq, which provides the maps, should get their act together, however, and make it easier for consumers to help them correct errors in their map data.

I use this unit on the job where I have to go to multiple addresses, and need to find the most efficient route. This is why I chose this unit: it has a function (trip planner) that allows you to route multiple destinations in the most efficient way possible. This saves me so much time by preventing me from doubling back on myself, etc. You are also able to edit the saved route at any time. It also acquires satellites within seconds. The unit is great, overall, except for a few flaws that cost it two stars on this review. The first star was taken because it freezes up a-la Windows once a week. I don't know why I'm surprised at this, since it's run on Windows CE. There's no way to tell that it has frozen until you notice that it hasn't made any noise or moved its display in a while, at which time you've probably missed a turn or two. The display's refresh rate is pretty slow too, so it's not that noticeable when it freezes. The other star was yoinked because it will plot your route in a very indirect way. For instance, there may be a direct, straight-line route that you can plainly see on the display (if you zoom out a bit), but the unit will direct you in a circle around that straight line. WTF? I have found it prudent to check the route before departing by touching the lower left icon on the map screen so you can decide which directions you want to disregard. This has prevented a great deal of cussing and all around stress while using this GPS.

Great for your parents! "My 62 yrs old mom has been nagging me to find her a GPS, Garmin spoke too fast for her and she did not like the interface of Tom Tom. One thing she really wanted that only existed on older Garmin model. ALERT TONE! the DING DING before a turn to alert her of the imminent turn. This GPS has such alert tone. ALso this GPS speaks SLOW and clear.

This GPS also allows you to 1-touch pick Fastest time, Shortest Distance, More Freeway, Less Freeway with 1 touch right before you start your drive. One of the most intuitive and easy to use. Magellan truely deserve more credit since it's always overshadowed by Garmin and TomTom. I have used it on many routes, I can only say, GET IT!.

This is my second GPS unit. The other was a famous brand and was absolute junk. It couldn't find it's way around the corner. It is very highly praised? I travel from northern Wisconsin to Indianapolis and I can set the 1412 to avoid all the tolls in Chicago. It can't avoid one, but I miss all the others. Believe it or not it saves time not going through the tolls. I have the choice of alternate routes to keep the long drive differant. The detour feature is fantastic, I always have to use it on I-65. The speech feature is a no brainer, why spend all your time looking at your GPS. My radar detector has speech too. I want to see where I am going as I drive mostly at night. Another feature I like is that it shows the names of streets and highways as you pass them. It tells you the time you will get there based on your average speed. It tells you how many miles to go(which can be depressing). There is a page you can go to anytime you are stopped where you can check your average speed, how many average miles traveled in 10 minutes, your lat. / long., average number of satelites(out of 24) being picked up, and a few other statistics. The speech can be many languages, I use British just for fun. There is one fault I discovered.from living up north. If you live in the cold, do not leave it in your car overnight, that is the only fault I have, and that is mine.

What's great about it: Text to speach feature lets you drive, get directions and never take your eyes off the road
What's not so great: Absolutely nothing

Used the Magellan to guide us on 7600 mile trip to west coast and back. Since wife has trouble reading maps, this GPS unit saved our marriage! Easy to program destinations, can find you bathrooms in an emergency and motels at night when you are tired, it's dark outside and you are in a strange town etc. I don't leave the house without it ever again. A great GPS for car.
