The Wide Screen Magellan 1400 Ratings and Reviews

The wide screen (4.3") Magellan 1400 is the lowest priced wide screen unit in the Magellan line up of GPS. Portable auto GPS units like the Magellan 1400, although it has only the basic features, still can get you to your destination. Equipped with preloaded maps of the lower 48 States plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico, the Roadmate 1400 has many good features. The one feature that is probably missed the most, is text to speech. The unit still will tell you when and what direction to turn, but will not announce the street name. The maps are viewable in 2D and 3D and "TrueView" will give you a split screen detail of the approaching turn. Other handy features included with the Magellan 1400 are "TowTruck" and "Home". When you touch the TowTruck icon it gives you your current location which enables you to give accurate directions to road service. The Home icon can be programed for your home location allowing you to create a route back home with the touch of the icon. Creating routes is easy too. You just touch the icon of any one of the 1.3 million Points of Interest and a route to that location will be created for you. You can enter an address and the "QuickSpell" feature can anticipate your entry and finish it for you. It will also correct your spelling. You may also select a previous destination, or a location from the address book. If you have a number of stops along the way, you can create a multi-destination route. A nice feature for deliveries and sales calls. You can also select criteria for your route such as, the fastest route, the shortest route, the most economical route, etc. You can also exclude highways or freeways, toll roads and more. If you find yourself in slow moving traffic, the "SmartDetour" feature may be programed to provide a detour around the problem, if possible. Should you make a wrong turn or miss your turn, "Auto reroute" will get you back on course. In addition to the 1.3 million Points of Interest preloaded in the Magellan 1400, the address book allows you to enter more Points of Interest of your own. A SD card slot is provided, however the SD card is not. With a SD card you can use the backup/restore function to backup your address book. Magellan is using the Centrality Atlas III processor which has an integrated GPS receiver. The Centrality Atlas III has high sensitivity for obtaining satellite locks in weak GPS signal areas and gives an accuracy of 3 meters. This Magellan Road Mate GPS has an affordable price making this a viable basic GPS.
There is nothing like word of mouth recommendations. That's why we have included owners' reviews of the Magellan 1400 on this site. When someone purchases a GPS with their own money and actually uses it in everyday life I think you can get a much better picture of how the portable GPS system will meet your needs. We have tired to include both the pros and cons of the unit being reviewed. I hope this will help you make a decision. Owner Magellan 1400 Portable GPS Review

We love this navigation system but just wish they had put a nicer sounding voice on it...This woman sounds like a person does when they pinch their nose closed and speak or like when you have a bad cold and sound very nasal. After having Magellan systems installed in three different vehicles over the past eight years all costing over 2,000.00 each, we are so happy they finally have an affordable system that is also interchangeable between our vehicles. This is the first GPS I have owned but I must agree with everyone that rated it prior to my purchase it is easy to use updates fast and so far has not sent me astray. I especially like the feature that does not keep telling you it is recalculating (if you do not follow the course it calculates)as my brothers unit does. I would recommend this GPS to anyone that is new to the GPS world and wants an easy to use unit that seems to have many features for the price. By Steve Mas NJ "Steve", January 12, 2009
I'm very selective about my electronics--probably to a fault. I read the reviews from several spots on the net. I have a Magellan Roadmate 650 which is several years old and have had no problems except I need to get new maps. I bought this 1400 for my wife. She needs things efficient and not complicated and that's exactly what this unit is. It gets her where she wants to go without complication. The video is crisp. It is loud enough to play the radio and still here and it repeats the next move if you need it to. Taking it on and off is easy. My only minor problem is that this is for a SUV and the little window adapter holder really does not extend out as far as I would like. I just hooked it up to one of the windshield holders from my 650 and it worked great. It would have been nice if the included an adapter to enable it to be plugged in to the wall outlet. Best Buy:

I got this as a present and thought I wouldn't like it because I know my way around my part of the world, but what I didn't recognize what that for scheduling my trips, it was invaluable. I can see what time I will be there, find my best routes, get info on restaurants and hotels among many other atributes. I would recommend this to anyone needing a GPS for your vehicles. It is also portable which I find very useful on the bicycle in the woods when trail riding. By z85sparty, 10/27/2008
I love this GPS unit. It is really user friendly and easy to use for those who are not tech savy! The features are great, although I wish I could update them easier! Overall, it's a great unti for the price and I would recommend it to anyone! Owner RoadMate 1400 Ratings
