Magellan RoadMate 3040LM Owner Reviews Amazon By madtsr, December 26, 2010 I would give this an average rating, but knocked it down a star because of the stupidity regarding the charger. Who wants to sit in their car for 4 hours to charge this device? That's what it takes to fully charge the unit using the car charger, which is the only charger that comes with this device. It does not come with a wall outlet AC Adaptor for charging in the home (but they will sell you one for $26), and the device cannot be charged via the computer using the USB cable they provide. The USB cable only updates the software and maps (Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 only - does not work with Macs) and your device must be charged to update these things, so you can sit in your car for 4 hours or buy an AC wall adaptor. I am an electrical engineer by trade, so I am very familiar with all things electrical/electronic, including AC adaptors. I don't like when companies do this crap, so I usually go on ebay and buy an OEM-compatible AC adaptor when I need one. I paid $11 for an OEM-compatible Roadmate 3030 AC adaptor, and it is working just fine. Don't let them scare you with `voiding the warranty' threats. I have non-OEMs for pretty much every electronic device that didn't come with one, or when I wanted extra ones, like for my laptop. I bought two extra for my laptop because I kept forgetting to pack up the one it came with. I leave one in the office, one at home & I take one with me on the road. For laptops/computers, it is important to make sure they have the built-in surge protection. I have never had a problem with any non-OEM adaptor for any device in 20+ years. AC adaptors are very simple devices. As long as the connector fits and the voltage/amperage are the same, the non-OEM adaptor is just as good (look for a reputable vendor of course). Hopefully if everyone looks elsewhere for these `optional' items, they will stop doing this crap to us. Now for the device features - This is an average GPS unit. If you are looking for something fancy to impress, look elsewhere. If you just want to get where you are going, this unit will do. There are the usual problems with the maps not having the latest info sometimes, especially `new' subdivisions (my niece's subdivision went up 5+ yrs ago and her address still does not exist on the latest map). By electronic Gadgetphile, December 17, 2010 I have other GPS units of varying ages and sizes but I always balk at spending $80-$100 for map updates for these devices that new cost only a bit more than that. When I saw that the Magellan RoadMate 3030 LM was available with lifetime map updates for only $30 more than the standard unit it looked like a deal. The unit itself has a big, well lit screen that is easy to read both day and night. The controls are rather intuitive and I like the lane assist feature that indicates the lane you need to be in at intersections. This is an especially valuable feature when traveling the California freeway systems where last minute lane changes can be difficult and/or hazardous to your health:>) For usability and build construction I would rate this unit 5 stars. The "Lifetime Map Updates" are elusive at best. I registered my device per the website instructions and then proceeded to the software update page. The listing in Amazon's website indicates that up to four updates per year can be downloaded for free so I was interested in using one of my four annual updates to get my new unit current. The software update page has a drop down menu for the series - in this case "RoadMate" and then a selection for model number on a similar drop down menu. Unfortunately, the Magellan RoadMate 3030 LM is not listed in the drop down menus and the FAQ's on the Help page don't address the issue. So my next step is to send a message to the Magellan Help Desk to figure out what is going on. In the meantime, I'm happy with the unit but concerned that updates will ever become available for this unit.
