You'll find Magellan GPS review and more on Magellan GPS units. The discontinued Magellan Maestro 3100 GPS is a basic, entry level navigation unit that will give directions turn-by-turn both by voice and visually. With preloaded maps of the lower 48 states, that may be viewed in 2D or 3D, you'll have no problem getting to your desired destination. Even at its' low price, the Maestro 3100 offers some unique "extras".

Creating a route is easy too. Just select one of the 750,000 Points of Interest or enter the address of your destination and your route will be created for you. Making sales calls or deliveries? MagellanThe Magellan 3100 multi-point routing lets you create stops along the way although it does not prioritize the stops for the most efficient routing. If you find yourself stuck in traffic, "Smart Detour" will activate to automatically prompt you to route around the problem.

The brilliant 3.5" color screen includes "Auto night view" which adjusts the color and contrast for night driving. Another nice feature is "TrueView" which gives a pop-up visual of upcoming turns. "TowTruck" better known as "Where am I" will give your current location allowing you to give directions should you need road-side service. The integrated antenna along with SiRFstarIII™ gives you the fastest GPS position accuracy in the industry. The rechargeable battery is rated at 3 hour battery life, but you probably will achieve something less. Its' small size makes it easy to slip into your purse or pocket and take it with you.

Customers of a newly purchased Magellan Vehicle Navigation units are covered by their 30-Day Map Guarantee. This guarantee gives customers who have purchased and registered their new Magellan Maestro™ or RoadMate™ device the ability to update their device's preloaded map free of charge if Magellan releases or makes available a map update within 30 days of the date of customer's purchase. I purchased a Magellan 3100 18 months ago. I have had it repaired twice and working on the third time. Customer Support very poor at best. Unit is very unreliable.

This is a terrible product mainly due to the power connector I've had this unit less than a year and it already can't be charged without constantly messing with the power connector. It died on me in the city today and I had a very hard time getting home as a result of this. When the unit worked it was great but the build quality is dismal.

Magellan 3100

By John C. Oberndorfer, January 5, 2009

I bought this unit a year ago, and it did decently. However, it tended to recommend routes that really didn't make sense at times. After my son's recent usage to navigate home from his honeymoon destination he complained that it needed updating. Soooooo, armed with access to the Magellan web site I set out to update my unit. There are two updates available: a free download to update the firmware, add points of interest (POIs) and add Hawaii and Puerto Rico maps. There's also updated North American maps available for a cost of $79.99 ($67.99 for AAA members).

Here's where the fun began. First--the free update only works with Windows XP (according to Magellan's web site). I'm running XP, so no problem. And, it's massive (over 900 MB) takes a long time to download even with fast DSL, dialup--FUGGEDABOUTIT!!!

I connected the unit with the USB cable and the fun began. The added hardware wizard in XP never seemed to run quite properly. Made it seem like I had two new drives hooked to the computer. Onward, I slogged.

When I started the update program (which I had previously unzipped) it then started to uzip itself even more. SHEESH

It hit the POI update file (a monstrous 898MB) and took 20+ minutes to upzip it.

I then got several error messages that stopped the whole update process.

Oh, it also erased the unit's firmware. I now had a big fat paperweight.

A quick Google search found several sites warning folks about doing this update.

Luckily, I stumbled across a site with instructions on how to manually update the unit. Three hours from when I started I finally had an updated unit.
