The Winplus Beacon GPS tracking device is a passive personal tracking system.

This GPS personal tracker will record where your car has been and for GPS individual tracking, is very popular with hikers. The Winplus Beacon personal GPS system, helps track your children or your employees driving habits with this easy to use product. Track any vehicle's location, speed and time with this Non-Real Time Tracking Unit. This unit can also be used to track a hiking trip. No subscription necessary,just download the software to your computer, calibrate the tracker and you are ready to go.

Calibration allows the user to set:

• The units used to display distance ie. miles, KM, etc.
• Time zone.
• Calibrate the compass settings.
• Recording intervals.
• Set back light.

Because the Beacon GPS tracking device is a self contained system, no fees or subscriptions are necessary. Simply install the software on your computer with the CD provided, charge the Lithium Ion battery (about 6 hours) and you're ready to go. It's small size makes the unit easy to conceal.

The Beacon GPS device records information in two different modes. The Nav Mode is used for vehicle recording and the Sport Mode is primarily used for hiking. The unit will continuously track vehicle location, speed, and time. In Sport Mode it will also track elevation. The track information may be overlaid on a Google Earth map. Battery life depends on the mode. In Nav Mode it will get up to 16 hours, in Sport Mode, it will get up to 160 hours between charges.

After seeing the reviews about inability to load files, I was very leery. I took the chance, and sure enough, the data files would not download to my PC. A quick trip to the maker's website revealed you need to be running .net framework 3.5 or higher. I was running a 2.X. The website even had a link to download 3.5 from MS. I uninstalled the Beacon S/W, downloaded & installed .net framework 3.5, reinstalled the Beacon S/W. When I plugged the Tracker into my USB the unit automatically downloaded and displayed its data. GREAT! One menu pick and it shows on a map! Or exports to an Excel spreadsheet file.

The unit has tracked very accurately for me, even when hidden under a seat in my son's car where I was afraid it wouldn't receive signal. I'm satisfied with my Beacon, it does all it claimed it would do.

Beacon GPS tracking device

I purchased to potentially track mileage for IRS purposes - software doesn't support that.

It is simple to use and accurate. DO NOT install the software from the CD...wouldn't work...most current is off their web site.

If all you want to be able to do is see where you have been...then you can do that and it will export to google earth and maps.

If you want to do more, like make mileage reports for tax purposes...then it doesn't do that.

If you want to use it like a GPS and go from one place to another...it's limited as far as ease of use. No moving map etc.

Beacon gps tracking device

This is not your "to the minute" tracking system like a full fleged expensive satellite system. We purchased to track our vehicles, where they were going and how long they were at their stops. It has worked fine for that. A little cumbersome, but worth the $90 we spent to purchase. I run Vista, Ultimate and haven't had a problem. Have also downloaded on my XP computer and haven't had a problem. To save the reports and view them later, you can't get as much data, but it will link to google, either just a map view or actual aerial view of the location so you can zoom in & see what it actually is. We are going to buy a couple more for additional crews. No monthly maintenance fee is a bonus too.
