Garmin nuvi 885T

The Garmin nuvi 885T is an upgrade of the Nuvi 855. This new offering (January, 2009) has a wide screen (4.3") and slim design, making it a convenient take along GPS device. The Garmin nuvi 885T is voice activated and adds bluetooth and MSN Direct to its' long list of features. "Voice activation" enables you to tell the Garmin Nuvi where you want to go and it will create a route to that destination. Or you can ask it where you are and it will tell you. My son has a voice activated GPS device and says that it "really works."

"Text to speech" leads the list of navigational aids included with the Garmin nüvi 855 . Your Garmin nuvi 885T not only tells you when and what direction to turn, but also tells you the street name. Add this to ""Lane assist" and you have the best of two worlds. Lane assist will tell you what lane you need to be in for the approaching turn. In addition, it will give you a view of the upcoming junction along with views of the road signs and it will even display the current speed limit.

Equipped with preloaded maps of North America and the routing features included, finding your destination couldn't be easier. The Garmin nuvi 885T will store up to 10 preplanned routes. It will also allow you to plan "multiple destinations" and then sort them to create the most efficient route. A great feature for making deliveries. You can also set up route criteria to get the fastest route or the shortest route. With "Route avoidance" you can even request the Garmin Nuvi to avoid tolls or highways. Should you run into a detour, "reroute" will automatically create a route around the problem and get you back on course.

Another new feature is "Photo navigation" which enables you to create routes to geotagged photos. Simply download Google® Panoramio™ pictures via Garmin Connect™ website and navigate to them. With "Hotfix" satellite prediction your Garmin Nuvi GPS will get you there faster.

Another navigation features included is "Where am I?" which will instantly give your latitude and longitude, the nearest address and intersection and the closest police and gas station. "Garmin locate" remembers your location when it is removed from your car. This allows you to locate your automobile in large parking lots such as shopping centers and amusement parks.

This GPS device is compatible with FM traffic and comes with a three month trial of MSN Direct. The receiver, which is built into the 12volt power cord, is included. With MSN Direct you can check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send locations to Garmin nuvi 885T. You should check coverage of these services to make sure your area is serviced. The following links take you to their coverage maps. MSN Direct coverage map. and Total Traffic Network coverage

Garmin provides a lot more features than just navigation with this Garmin nüvi 855 . Entertainment features include a world clock with time zone conversion, a MP3 player,"Garmin Games", Audio book, jpeg picture viewer, currency and unit converter and a calculator. It also includes over 6 million points of interest and you can add your own. You can select your keyboard layout (QWERTY or ABC) and with "Garmin Garage" you can choose voices and custom icons for your Garmin nuvi 885T.

A micro SD slot is built into the unit (micro SD card not included) enabling you to download your own music, books, pictures, maps and more. A FM transmitter is also provided with this Garmin Nuvi GPS. The FM transmitter will transmit the Garmin nuvi 885T sound to your FM car radio, greatly increasing the quality of the audio output. The Garmin Nuvi also comes with a built-in headphone jack. As with all Garmin Nuvi GPS units, it comes with "Garmin lock".

The Best Out There Garmin nuvi 885T

Excellent features and very good GPS. It gets a satellite lock inside my house!!! The voice recognition is the gem in this thing. It really works and once you start using it, it is very useful and functional. You don't have to push buttons.

Positives: Voice recognitions, lots of POIs, on-line sites like POI-Factory to add custom POIs (easy to do), and a very good set of features. I have tried (it works) but not extensively used the bluetooth hands free and mp3 player yet (8GB microSD card ordered) but I think it will be useful. MSN Direct is the way to go and works very well. I am getting helpful traffic updates in Louisville.

Negatives: I have to say the volume on the unit should be higher. I realize the FM radio option is there, but sometimes you are listening to the radio or a CD and it is hard to hear the Garmin.

Also the few hands-free calls I have taken have given very poor sound on the Garmin speakers making it not useful (maybe a software update? Not sure they are using the A2DP or a good profile.). They must fixe these two issues. They should already have this perfected. One other small potential issue. The band for the voice recognition button barely fits my steering wheel (last notch), on some others that are larger it could be an issue (but I think this may be minor)?

Solid But Not Perfect

I've had my 885T for about a week and a half. For the most part I like it and it has been useful. It has already made a few trips to unfamiliar spots in the city much less stressful and faster. It has its shortcomings though.

PROS: MSN Traffic service works well in Denver Metro area. Movie times seem accurate (I'm considering paying the one time fee). Slim size. Lane assist blew me away - how cool is that! Has been 99% accurate. Voice commands work really well even in noisy vehicle and allow for safer operation while driving. Voice command remote is unobtrusive and feels sturdy. Easily upload maps to unit directly from Google.

CONS: Suction cup mount falls often even on flat Jeep windshield (I'll end up using the disc sticky mounts). My Samsung Alias phone is not specifically supported for Bluetooth - seriously it's one of the most popular phones. Subsequently bluetooth connectivity has been frustrating and inconsistent. Speakers will probably suffice for a quiet ride but I'm in a Jeep with 32" mudders. FM transmitter (to hear voice prompts over sound system in your car) is worthless. New map update was nearly 2G and took a day and a half to download on DSL.

All in all I expected a little more functional quality for the price but I'd still recommend it to a friend that loves tech stuff but would recommend a cheaper model to someone who just wants a good GPS.

What's great about it: Easy to use, fast map loads, fast GPS fix, lane assist, speed limit, selective detour etc. What's not so great: None

I previously owned Nuvi 350, 660, 770, 880 and recently purchased the Nuvi 885T. I was very happy with my previous purchases as well this new Nuvi.

Lane assist is great. Selective detour is one of the most useful features for me. Unlike previous models it does not take time to load map data. The unit can get a GPS fix almost instantly if the unit is not powered off for more than few days.

After I registered the unit I was able to get a free map update for the unit by connecting to Garmin website. Garmin also offers life time map upgrade for a nominal fee.
