I have had the 3790T for about 2 months now and have noticed some things that others have not mentioned yet so I thought I would bring them to the attention of prospective buyers that do a lot of traveling. For the past 7 years I have traveled around country 3 or 4 days a week and take a GPS unit with me in my laptop bag everywhere I go. As a salesperson a GPS unit is an essential part of my travel gear to get me to hotels and meetings. This is my 4th Garmin Nuvi (the last being a 765T which I have had for 2 years). The 3790T has a lot of great features but there are some design flaws. 1) Although it has a slightly larger screen (and higher resolution) than the 765T the images on screen are actually smaller (and thus harder to see). Even using the zoom feature the vehicle icon and the roads are smaller than previous Garmin GPS units. 2) The window mount that you attach the unit itself to has a small lip on the top that sticks out to clamp the device in place. This may seem like a small thing but I am quite sure that it wont take much time before it breaks after being bounced around inside a laptop bag. If you are going to use a GPS for business travel it has to be both small and rugged. The real issue here is that if this lip breaks there is no way to that you use the unit. I suppose that you could let in lie loose on the dashboard and let it slide around (and point upwards where you can't see it anyway). The older Nuvi units just simply clip into place with no protrusions. Don't get me wrong this is a very cool GPS. It works well and has a lot of neat features but when I upgraded to this model I was hoping for something that would be more compact with a larger screen and was easier than my past GPS to carry in my laptop bag. Because of the slighter larger mount (this one has a speaker built into it!) and the much larger DC plug in unit it actually takes up more space than my 765T. By A. Downey, July 24, 2010
This newly released Garmin GPS has several great design features but also has some functional flaws that need to be resolved. For now, due to the very high price, I returned it until Garmin can fix these issues. Details are below. Pros (most important to least): Extremely well-designed thin profile. The display graphics are increadibly well-done: far more geographic detail exists compared to our previous Garmins It's also very light and fits easily in a pocket. Holding a conversation using Blue-Tooth via your cell phone works very well, though it takes several attempts to connect to the phone.
Cons (most important to least): Trouble with directions: within two weeks, it gave several routing directions that were nothing short of bizarre. The poor directions were neither shorter nor faster to the destinations. Note: I had it set to optimize time & eco-mode was turned off. It was being compared side-by-side with our Garmin 260W which gave correct directions at all times. Satellite Acquisition is poor. Our first acquistion took ~10 min. The next acquisition (also sometimes says Locating Satellites) took exactly 25 minutes! After these initial setup attempts it still took 2-3 times longer than the 260W for standard 'warm' acquisitions. The dash mount cradle & car charger use mini-USB connection while the 3790 itself uses a micro-USB connection. This is an insane design flaw because it means you cannot connect the charger (required for external power and FM traffic) directly to the unit. The unit must sit in the cradle. If the unit is not connected to external power it shuts itself down (power savings?) after a few minutes and you MUST power back on and unlock the screen! Even Garmin tech support did not know how to resolve this. Garmin tech support rep did not know how to reset the unit - I luckily did it once but could not repeat it. Voice (command) recognition has significant difficulty. Never did figure out the voice command for finding destinations in other cities. Power-on varies unpredictably between "I agree" and "unlock" screens. Even Garmin rep could not explain the why the difference. The screen does auto-change orientation whether holding 'landscape' or 'portrait'. However, it only shows correctly for one orientation each way: at 180deg for either one, the display will become upside-down.

I had high hopes for this new Garmin 3790T GPS unit. The first disappointment was with the supplied accessories. No AC adapter charger, no case and no way to charge unless you plug into the car. There was a quick start guide but no user manual. Had to go to the Garmin website to get this manual and print at my own cost. Very inconvenient and it seems you get very little these days for $450.00. Navigation features are just OK. It seems all the extra accessories cost an additional $25 to get each one. I didn't know I was going to have to spend this much money to get what should have been supplied with it. Garmin nuvi 3790T Owner Ratings
