Garmin nuvi 255W and Garmin nuvi 255 reviews and ratings

Like most of the other Garmin units, the only differences between the Garmin nuvi 255W and the Nuvi 255 is the screen size, resolution and the weight of the unit.

The desirability of the Garmin nuvi 255W wider screen is purely a matter of individual preference, but if you can afford it, the wide screen makes accessing the on-screen buttons much easier and of course, the maps appear larger and are easier to read.

Another valuable addition is the turn direction arrow which appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen. This arrow indicates the direction of the upcoming turn and the distance to that turn.

Unfortunately, they do not display the street name.

The Garmin nuvi 255W and Nuvi 255 also offer "text to speech" which is, without doubt, the most popular feature offered.

Other attributes of the Garmin nuvi 255W and the Nuvi 255 are the display of the current speed limit and "Where am I" which gives you your current location and direction to the nearest hospital, police station and fuel station. The Garmin nuvi 255W and Nuvi 255 also let you choose the keyboard layout. You may select QWERT or ABC.

The Garmin nuvi 255W and Nuvi 255 have improved routing and have a more rapid display. In addition, they have "hot fix" capability which locks in their position when you turn the unit off, allowing faster satellite acquisition when you turn it back on.

The Garmin nuvi 255W and Nuvi 255 are both compatible with the optional TMC traffic update and MSN Direct. Although the coverage of these services is Nationwide it is spotty and you should check to make sure that your area is included with any of these services. To check for your area click the following links: Total Traffic Network coverage and MSN Direct coverage map.

Garmin nuvi 255W and Nuvi 255 portable car GPS system reviews:

Amazon:

"Don't pay more, this has everything you need"

By George Rausch

Let me set the scene for you: I arrive in Los Angeles at the airport, turn on my GPS system and instantly am ready to navigate. I then spend two days driving around Los Angeles not knowing where anything is located and haven't gotten lost once...

The nuvi 255, as in my review title, is everything you need. Don't spend more because you think you'll need to...

By AC "gear guy"

I purchased the Nuvi 255 as a replacement for my Nuvi 350. There is nothing wrong with the 350 Garmin nüvi 350 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Text-to-Speech. The 255Garmin Nuvi 255 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator has safety features I want which include "Where Am I" that gives your location by street address, city, state, zip code, nearest intersection and coordinates. This is important in an emergency in a strange and/or unfamiliar location. Another safety feature is the display of the posted speed limit directly above your actual speed. This helps to avoid tickets and reminds one about safe driving. In closing, I saved the best feature for last--the GPS function is fast, flawless and exact.

" I love it"

Date: January 18, 2009

Pros: It talks and Im not worried about mispronunciation because I cant pronounce PA words worth a darn AND as you can see I cant spell either. It took me a way home the first day and saved me some gas...I didn't even know that I could go home that wayCons: The fact it only came with a car charger no usb for the computer or a home charger

"Garmin is Great!"

Date: December 29, 2008

Pros: Spoken street names is an excellent benefit. We used Garmin to navigate the Orlando/St. Pete area while on vacation and she was excellent. If you pass a recommended street she immediately recalculates the route so that you still get to your destination. We bought Garmin on black Friday for the low, low price of $152.

Cons: Sometimes Garmin takes a few minutes to acquire a satellite.

Nuvi 255W

Date: January 13, 2009

Pros: Great little unit, as I expected.

Cons: Really urks me that Garmin does not provide a case to go with this. To me this a a means to take advantage of their customers.

GPS Nuvi 255W

Date: January 6, 2009

Pros: Nice display, good directions.

Cons: Cost to much to add traffic alertsNo blue tooth, Voice quality poor at 70% volume and up.

"nuvi 255W Rocks!!"

Date: December 23, 2008

I am impressed!!

Pros: This little thing picks up a satellite signal very quickly. I had it on the front seat of my car covered with a coat, away from the windows and it was still able to keep a signal! Amazing! The volume on the voice is quite sufficient.

Cons: They need to add a usb cable with the unit. It is impossible to register the gps without the usb cable. You must go to Garmin's website to register. What a pain that was! They need more voice options. It's ok though...I'm happy!
