I "upgraded" to the 1490t in time for a trip from DC to NYC after my 5 year-old Nuvi 350 wore out. I should have realized something was wrong when the traffic service did not work. Larger screen and improved graphics were impressive. But about 1.5 hours in to my trip the GPS crashed and would not reboot. Despite several restarts, it would not get past the loading maps screen. I googled the problem and discovered than many other people have suffered the same disappointment. This unit is going back to Amazon and I will comment on their return service. Too bad - would have been a great GPS if it worked. I saw some of the negative reviews on Amazon and incorrectly assumed Garmin would have fixed the problem by now. Shame on Garmin for shipping so many defective units. And shame on me for assuming corporate responsibility. DON'T BUY THIS GPS! By Squawky, June 13, 2010
I've had numerous Garmin GPSs. This one has a ton of features and the screen looks great. I was delighted to see it came with a traffic subscription - but I was very unhappy to see annoying ads on my GPS with no way to disable those ads. I think if I pay $250 for a GPS, I should be able to disable the ads. The Bluetooth works, but the sound, according to the people I call, is terrible.

Overall I'm very pleased with this device.. Had some initial reliability problems when using Bluetooth phone in that the system would reboot about every hour or so, very annoying, however recent firmware update (free) from Garmin seems to have addressed this issue. I really like the Google maps interface i.e. when I find a location in Google maps I can sent that information direct to the device, very cool. The "quickest route" selection does not always take you on the quickest route as when in LA it attempted to direct down a sequitous route of side streets vice keeping me on the freeway which had minimal traffic and traffic indicator showed no indications of blockages. I like the find a restaurant / motel etc. feature, very useful. Plus it has ties to phone numbers so you can call the place your heading to for reservations info etc.. VERY COOL. Overall I would highly recommend this device, its so much nicer than paper maps.

purchased a second Nuvi 1490t for a volunter emergency service. My first 1490 had strange routings but I figured over time it would get use to a correct route. It never has. Placed side by side, going to the same destination both take me on totally different routes. It's not the unit's fault but more the routing from Garmin, I think. The 1490 is the best hand-held GPS on the market currently. just be aware that the route may not be the most efficient route and that you may end up on a dead end road like me. I hope the lifetime updates will soon correct the errors. Owner Ratings
