With FM Traffic included
The Garmin 660 provides it all

Garmin nuvi 660

One of the most popular discontinued Garmins, the Garmin 660 is still in demand. A proven winner, this unit comes with a 4.3" brilliant color screen and preloaded maps of North America or Europe to get you to your destination. Both maps may be viewed in 2D or 3D name" Loaded with millions of Points of Interest, you'll be able to find fuel, restaurants, hotels, ATMs and more all just a touch away. You can also add custom POIs of your own such as safety camera locations or school zones. You even have the ability to set up POI alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. The rechargeable Lithium Ion battery will provide up to 7 hours of battery life between charges.

Text to Speech is included with the Garmin 660 which allows the unit to tell you the name of the street on which to turn, in addition to what direction to turn and when to do so. There are several easy ways to create a route. You can select one of the millions of POIs and a route will be created to it. If you wish, you can enter the address of the desired destination or select a previous destination.

Customizing a route is easy too. You have the option of selecting faster time, shortest distance, off road, avoid highways, toll etc. Should you miss a turn along the way or make a wrong turn, auto reroute will get you back on track.

The included Bluetooth® technology enables you to make hands free calling with your Garmin 660. This is a nice feature, but the number of cell phones the system is compatible with is limited. Click HERE to see if it will work with your phone. I have heard that the system will work with some phones that are not on the list, but I wouldn't count on it. The Nuvi 660 also comes with a built in FM transmitter allowing the user to transmit the Nuvi's sound to your FM car radio, greatly enhancing the sound quality. This is particularly a nice feature when using the built in MP3 player. Using the SD card slot (SD card must be purchased separately as it is not included) and a SD card you can bring your favorite music with you. The unit will also play Audio Books.

A big plus is the included FM Traffic receiver which allows the user to obtain up to the minute traffic updates that will display on the Garmin 660's screen. With auto reroute you can create detours around traffic tie-ups. Garmin uses two different traffic alert services. They are Navteq and Clear Channel. You may wish to check the service coverage of each of these services. Simply click Clear channel coverage or Navteq traffic coverage to determine which is the best for you.

Other entertaining items included with the Garmin 660 are a world clock, currency converter, calculator and picture viewer. Garmin lock is also provided to prevent theft of the unit and you can use Garmin Garage to select the vehicle of your choice to display on the screen. As these units are discontinued, you may find yourself without an owner's manual. If so just click HERE to download a copy of the owner's manual for the Nuvi 660. Also you will want to check to make sure you have the most recent version of Garmin's software for the unit. It should be Version 4.7. If not, you can click Garmin Software Download to get the update. While there you can also update your POIs. If you really want to have some fun go to GPS Voices to download a different voice for your Garmin nuvi 660. It will make your day.

Some times you think this thing is great and some features are. Pros are the ease of loading MP3's and blue tooth. Cons which are more numerious - You get 1 map update free then you have to pay 80 to $100's Mine has been updated once to January 2009 Some times it will find your address some times not. Went to Panama city Fl and set it for shortest route at Troy Al it failed to make the proper directions and was constantly trying to put me on hwy 231 or 331. My wife wanted me to turn the darn thing off. Not sure I would recommend a Garmin, seems to me life time updates should come with the unit.

I purchased a Nuvi 660 in July of 2007 for a little over $600. The first thing to go inoperable was the bluetooth and I could live with that since I did not use the feature very often and I prefer a BT headset. This week 22 months after my purchase the unit started getting stuck in acquiring satellite mode on a trip which left me flying blind. My frustration is now enhanced as the unit is now unable to acquire a satellite signal at all. I called Garmin support and they walked me through the web-updater which did not solve the problem. I now have a brick with a nice display. Garmin wants $50 to repair the unit which I am hesitant to pay. With a map update and the $50 repair cost I would have forked over $800 to Garmin for a product that reeks of planed obsolesce. I am so tired of electronics with build quality that serve to only fill landfills. I will now be using Google Maps and filling the landfill with paper.

This GPS is feature packed and don't get me wrong, some of the features are cool. However, it fails (in my case) at what it was designed to do; which is navigate. More often than not, it takes a couple minutes for it to recognize where you are and sometimes not at all.

Pros: The screen automatically adjusts for daytime and nighttime navigation. The bluetooth is nice and works fairly well. Sound quality is loud enough to hear even with excessive road noise. Has tons of features and looks great.

Cons: It comes with an FM transmitter which is more of a gimmick than a great feature and it doesn't work very well. I attached a wire behind my radio to get a better signal and it worked a little better. The navigation is slow and takes a long time to position itself.

It's not without it's flaws, the same annoyances you will find in any GPS, sometimes choosing the wrong route, or not knowing about a small street (of course software updates can remedy some of this) but this Garmin is great, and it always gets you where you need to go. My only recommendation...TURN OFF THE VOICE! It will drive you crazy and you should be able to get where you're going just by checking the screen from time to time. I also use this on my motorcycle and that works well too! I used heavy duty zip-ties and bought a second mount here on Amazon...so far so good! Downside to that is it isn't waterproof...but I don't particularly like riding in the rain anyway!
