For basic navigation the Garmin 350 nuvi is a proven winner

The Garmin 350 nuvi is still popular although is was introduced in 2006. It has a bright 3.5" color touch screen and comes preloaded with maps of North America or Europe. The maps are viewable in 2D or 3D, showing you the way to your destination. The rechargeable Lithium Ion battery will give you up to 8 hours before recharging. Text to Speech is included and instead of just hearing "turn right in 500 feet" you will hear "turn right on Williams Street in 500 feet. I feel this is a must have feature on any automotive GPS system. Garmin has one of the easiest systems to create a route. You can just touch "Where to" on the screen and input the address of your desired destination. Or you could select one of the millions of Points of Interest and create a route to it. You also can select a previous destination and a route will be created. You also have a choice of route setup (faster time, shorter distance, off road) and route avoidance (avoid highways, tolls etc.). Once underway, should you make a wrong turn or miss a turn, auto reroute will get you back on track. It may also be used to create a detour around traffic tie-ups. You have the ability to add custom POIs such as school zones or safety camera locations. You then can set up alerts to warn of approaching zones or camera locations. A nice feature that could save you the cost of a ticket. The Garmin 350 nuvi is FM traffic compatible. You must purchase the receiver and the service separately as they are not included with the unit. Garmin uses two Traffic Alert services and you may wish to check them out to determine which would be best for you. Simply click on the appropriate link to view their coverage area. Clear channel Traffic coverage or Navteq Traffic coverage The traffic alerts will be displayed on your screen at the appropriate location. A really useful feature to avoid traffic jams. Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 350 includes many “must have” entertainment and travel tools including MP3 player, audio book player (subscription to Audible.com required), JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock™, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with their free Garmin Garage where you can download custom vehicles that show your location on the map. As these units are discontinued you may find one without an owner's manual. Just click Nuvi 350 Owner's Manual to down load your copy. If you really want to have some fun go to GPS Voices to download a different voice for your Garmin 350 nuvi. It will make your day.

By L. nguyen, May 7, 2009 I've had other gps devices before i decided on this one...which is one of my biggest mistakes. As opposed to other gps systems, you have to flip the antennae on this one to get a signal which negates its supposingly compact size. I thought it was gonna be much smaller to carry around, but with the flip antennae, its such a nuisance....wished i kept my old one. By Anne L. McQuade, May 3, 2009
The Garmin Nuvi 350 is a terrific help. I travel extensively and used to get lost extensively :). The Garmin talks me through wherever I am heading and even if there is a detour or I don't want to take a particular road, it compensates and takes me another way. This is the second one I have bought. I bought this second one for my 74 year old father who gets lost a lot and at first he thought it would be too hard for him to learn how to use it. He tried it and now swears by it. It is that easy to learn. I really appreciate a product that delivers what it promises. By Kitty. H "Great Dane", April 8, 2009

I bought this item from Amazon on July 2008. By March 2009 it stopped working. I wouldn't buy this product again. By gracethedog, March 17, 2009
We've had our nuvi 350 for two years now (bought 3.2009). It's a great product when it works but it recently completely stopped acquiring satellites, a common problem, it seems, with Garmin's "flip-up" antenna design. A $14 plug-in external antenna (10 feet of wire with a magnet on the end for mounting to your vehicle's roof) from Amazon.com solved the problem but I still fault the nuvi's design weak spot and would not recommend this product or any similar ones. This was bought as a gift for my husband, who does like it a lot. Complaints are: battery does not last very long despite how long it is charged and up to a full charge; maps are not updated. This was a gift given Christmas 2007 and even roads built and finished within that year were not in the program. Updates of maps are ridiculously expensive. BestBuy

What's great about it: Faster start up What's not so great: cannot save my preferred routes
This is my second garmin gps, the first one does not have a preloaded map and that can get annoying; with the nuvi 350, map is preloaded & I can use it out from the box. Start up time is faster than older generation of garmin gps. I have this unit for a year now & my battery still is in good conditon, unit still does it's job. Here's what I don't like: 1) cannot save preferred routes which in my old unit that is possible. 2) when program to calculate for shortest routes it wil give me too many turns. 3) there is one route that I am supposed to turn right but the gps never said anything, but on screen it is showing a right turn. Garmin is a good product, they are not perfect but this unit helped me to get to my destination when I am in unfamiliar place.
